"The Three Studies side of this record is some of the most chaotic music ever written. The drumming is some of the most incredible and fast drumming Iāve ever heard ö a friend of mine swore they had a drum machine when he first heard them. The expressiveness and urgency Three Studies exudes is unparalleled in hardcore as far as Iām concerned. Coleman is one of my favorite bands of all time. They are a heavy, heavy band (and I mean that emotionally, not musically). Their half of this record is easily some of the best music made in the history of hardcore. The band consists of drums, guitar and vocals and you never notice the absence of a bass. The lyrics are intense and complex. I canāt really capture what this band does in words, itās beautiful and nasty, itās intellectual and primal ö itās just important that you hear this record. Easily one of the best split LPās that have ever been made." - BEN, MTNCIA
"Coleman was a band I saw a bunch of times when I was first getting into DIY hardcore and they remain one of my favorites. With just a guitar and drums they created a uniquely great sound, alternating between pounding fast parts and winding, rhythmic breakdowns, over which singer Jackie would scream from the floor (when the mike was actually in front of her face). By the end of the set, she was sure to be bleeding (none of that pathetic whining, fake crying, or songs about plants passing for "emocore" now). I was actually surprised when I got this at how well the lyrics convey the visceral sense of alienation and disquiet that I got from watching this band. Coleman's music simply seethes with dark emotions. 3 Studies play that same technical, spastic kind of HC that has become watered down to the point of absolute tedium since, but still remains pretty urgent and powerful here. I could give a shit about technical proficiency, but this music is complex without losing the passion that keeps me engaged. I love this record because it so fixed in my mind in a certain time (mid 90s) and place (boston), and because it has a solid vision and depth while combining two very distinct bands." - JEFF, MTNCIA
